Born of complete and utter fibre addiction and a desire to share Swiss Mountain Silks and other exquisite fibres with the knitting community, Hand Maiden Fine Yarn was started on the west coast in 2005. We quickly outgrew our nest and returned to Nova Scotia to join our sister brand Fleece Artist at our custom designed dye house where we continue today. As always, Hand Maiden Fine Yarn proudly employing emerging artists with a flair for colour dyeing our custom colours. Some of our current dyers are textile artists, painters, illustrators, photographers and jewellers with their own art practice.
All of our Swiss Mountain yarns are certified Oeko-Tex Made In Green, which evaluates not just the ethics and sustainability of the manufacturing processes but also the safety and social responsibility of company. We have yet to certify our own micro-scale dye work with a global certification agency, but we endeavor to follow the same responsible, safe and sustainable practices in every way possible. We also often partner with social agencies for knitting for-a-Cause fundraising and have since 2020 raised more than $10000 for charity.
Hand Maiden Fine yarn is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and dynamic workplace for our small but mighty team. We dye our yarns entirely by hand in tiny batches, just enough for a single sweater at a time, taking care that our yarns are not just pleasing to our taste, but to yours. Our goal is to always think beyond just the colour, to showcase the natural qualities of the yarn and thus enlivening your hand made projects.
